Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Arcana System

Last updated: August 2026

The Arcana system is the mechanic that stops Belmont's Curse from being "Symphony of the Night in Paris." When Rose defeats a boss, that boss is sealed into her tarot cards and becomes an Arcana: a spell, a special action, or both. Gamescom coverage said there appear to be at least 15 Arcana. At Gamescom 2026, lead level designer Sandro Bordier told PCGamesN that Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon are the references that "characterize Rose" through spells and tarot. That is a full second skill tree hiding inside the boss list. The practical tutorial is how to unlock Arcana.

Boss battle that feeds the Arcana tarot system in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Cards, mana, and the first flame

Rose begins with a fireball journalists called Cursed Flame. It costs mana. Mana comes back when you kill, so the loop is "melee to fund spells." Some write-ups say tarot abilities also recharge by landing basic attacks. Either way, standing still to conserve MP is wrong. Throw the flame, then refill on the next ghoul.

Each card lists three Acts of Mercy or Works of Mercy — the naming differs by outlet, the structure does not. They are challenges tied to that spell. Cursed Flame's early goal is to kill 20 enemies with the fireball. Completing a challenge grants a point you spend on a Blessing: extra range, extra damage, a unique rider such as knockback. The Guardian watched a modest fireball become a pushing inferno after that 20-kill task.

Known cards from previews

The Fallen yields the Holy Cross boomerang and the Arcana Whip traversal. Joan of Arc yields a ground explosion. Medusa yields a petrification beam. Holy Cross Works of Mercy in the Gamescom demo were: find three whip-like weapons, kill ten enemies with a whip attack, kill five enemies with the cross. Blessings on that card included throwing two crosses, more damage at range, and MP refund if you catch the return. That is a miniature build inside one item.

This is also why the boss hub is not just a trophy case. Skipping a fight means skipping a verb. If a castle shaft is gated, the missing key is probably an Arcana special action, not a rusty key in a candle. Use the Arcana tracker so you know which Blessings you still owe the deck.

How to spend Blessings without wasting them

Preview Blessings are mutually interesting rather than strictly ranked. On Holy Cross, double throw is a crowd tool, range damage is a sniper tool, catch-refund is a mana tool. Pick the Blessing that covers a hole in your build. If your melee already deletes packs, take the refund. If Joan is bullying you at the feet, take knockback or explosion upgrades instead.

Do not ignore the third Work of Mercy because the first Blessing already feels good. The system exists to stop you from finding one spell and sleeping on it for 15 hours. Farm the challenge while you explore the Paris map. The XP you earn on the way is the same XP that makes the next boss honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Arcana are in the game?

Gamescom coverage estimated at least 15. Konami has not published a complete list before launch.

Do I have to complete Works of Mercy?

No, but Blessings are the intended power spike. Skipping them is how a later boss starts to feel cheap rather than fair.
