Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Hands-On Preview
Last updated: August 2026
By late August 2026 the press had three real play windows: a three-hour summer session (GameSpot, PlayStation Blog, IGN, PC Gamer, The Guardian), Konami's first public demo at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne (26–30 August), and a shorter Gamescom hour from VGC. PAX West in Seattle follows on 4–7 September. Scores do not exist. Feel does. This page is the synthesis, not a fake 9/10. The dedicated Gamescom 2026 page covers the booth, interviews, and IGN studio clip.

What everyone agreed on
It feels like a Castlevania. Movement is immediate: wall jump, slide, dodge, then a whip that becomes a trapeze after The Fallen. Combat is faster than NES, closer to a polished Dead Cells cousin without the run structure. Bosses hurt. XP from trash is a real retry tool. Arcana are the identity mechanic — sealing a boss into a card is more interesting than another exp bar. Paris looks expensive and colorful, which some fans already dislike for not being brown enough. That argument will not be settled in a wiki paragraph.
VGC called the Gamescom slice "relatively safe" while still being excited, and described a 2.5D look with comic-style outlines on foreground geometry. The hour started with wall jump, slide, dodge, a dagger, and the first Arcana — the whip trapeze comes later. GameSpot thought the rising Metroidvania tide had been absorbed without making the game a clone. PlayStation Blog said it felt like a modern Castlevania should. PC Gamer joked that it plays classic Vania on fast-forward with a whip to die for. PCGamesN's Gamescom interview with Tsutomu Taniguchi, Bérenger Dupré, and Sandro Bordier named Symphony of the Night, Super Castlevania IV's omnidirectional whip, and Aria of Sorrow plus Circle of the Moon as tarot references. If you want systems, go to combat. If you want route, go to the walkthrough.
Friction already visible
The Fallen is a steep first check. Switch is 30 fps. Yamane is not on the score. Some viewers hate the painterly look. Konami still has not shown a complete late-game map. None of that makes the preview bad. It makes the October 15 file the real review. Come back after launch and this page should be replaced by scored coverage, not treated as scripture.
For video, use the guide embeds rather than this article. The Fallen guide and how to play already lazy-load the relevant official and preview clips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did previewers finish the game?
No. The longest published sessions are about three hours and two or three bosses.
Is it a roguelike in disguise?
Konami, The Verge, Eurogamer, and IGN all printed the denial. The map is crafted.
